Divisibility rules for 5 and 10

Overview

Divisibility by 5

A number is divisible by 55 iff its last digit is 00 or 55.

Divisibility by 10

A number is divisible by 1010 iff its last digit is 00.

Both rules follow from the fact that 10=2510 = 2 \cdot 5, so in base 10 only the last digit contributes to the remainder modulo 55 or 1010.

Examples

  • 1234512\,345 is divisible by 55 (last digit 55).
  • 81208\,120 is divisible by 1010 (last digit 00), and therefore also by 55.
